My Hair History

Okay, so basically the last time my mother cut my hair was when I was 2yrs old. She kept my hair natural most of the time unless there was a special occasion she would relax it then let it transition back to natural. I hated my natural hair not because it was ugly or anything but because it was just soooo damn painful. So when i turned 12 i was given the right to control what happens to my hair and I chose the relaxer route and have never turned back.
However I was young and ignorant really didn't know how to take care of my hair and it used to break so much.
Then i turned 14 and started experimenting with highlights dyes etc and yes, my hair got damaged.
I also used to get cute short bobs and trims to keep my hair shoulder length.
Then finally about 4 years ago in 2012 I decided to start my Healthy Relaxed Hair Journey.

Something for Natural Hair

Hey Guys! My name is Whety and I’ve been a natural my entire life.
I only started taking proper care of my hair about a year ago when I started reading blogs and websites on natural hair. My hair type is a mix, so my front is 4b and back is 4c meaning that it’s prone to a lot of dryness, so moisture is my best friend.

  •  I try to keep my hair in protective styles, to prevent it from breaking and to lock in the moisture. So most of the times you will see me with box braids or weaves, I also like to change my hairstyles a lot because I get bored easily. But when I do have my hair out I usually have it in twist outs or blown out, although I try to prevent heat.
  •  My wash days are quite the mission. Lol. I start with pre-pooing my hair ( oil treatment applied to hair prior to shampooing or conditioning.), and what I use is Tresemme Naturals conditioner and an oil (eg.Jojoba, Tea tree, Castor) on damp hair, I let it sit for an hour under a shower cap. After this I then wash my hair with the Tresemme Shampoo and Condition it, I try to avoid using a comb and usually finger detangle my hair. When I'm done washing my hair I use a leave in conditioner and an oil to twist out my hair. I use Capicilin Cachos  as a leave in conditioner which I buy in Mozambique but I’ve also used Dr Miracles Weightless Moisturizing Cream, you can find it at Clicks, and it worked miracles on my hair. For the oil I use Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, but also Tea Tree Oil, Jojoba Oil, Castor Oil. Once my hair is twisted I let it air dry and rock the twists till I undo it and wear my very kinky curls.

I believe that a natural hair journey can be challenging but really awesome because you are constantly learning new things about your hair. Also be patient with your hair and accept it. So many times I see a girl with 3C hair and wish it was mine, but I’ve learnt how to love my hair just as it is, kinks and all.  That’s probably one of the only ways you will see progress.
feel free to comment and ask questions :)
thank you & take care of that hair

  1. wow! pretty hectic hair regime! your natural hair looks so healthy...I have a ton of oils which just sit there looking pretty and colorful. The problem with my hair is that after iv washed it, it shrinks to the point where its less than 10cm long yet its probably down to my neck by now. I don't know how to manage it, nor do I know the texture, a, b, or number...its just sitting on my head i guess (clueless -_-) any ideas on how to manage shrinkage, or maybe right comb or brush to use when blow drying? #natural hair madness

    1. The first way to battle shrinkage is to accept it. I know its really hard but you have to accpet your hair for what it is. Another way to battle shrinkage is by twisting your hair, using a leave in and a oil, right after you wash it, this usually stretches it out especially when you undo the twists. Always use a wide tooth comb, and try to blow out your hair using minimum heat. But that's the thing about being a natural, accepting and loving your hair for what it is.
